Leon Pagnano

This 1902 French beauty was originally built by an aristocratic family on a quiet street that connected the President’s residence and the Chilean Ambassador’s residence. The years went by and The Presidential palace (in which the Peron’s lived) was destroyed to make way for the National Library and the Chilean Ambassador’s wife, Josepehina Alvear, donated their residence and is now the Museum of Decorative Arts. The two-block street connecting them remains one of the quietest in Buenos Aires.

In the front of the building, the family built four grand apartments to house the generations. Each has soaring 15’ ceilings and spacious dimensions. Upon opening the door and steeping into the hall, you will be greeted by a 30’ waterfall viewed through an enormous plate glass window. Nighttime lighting makes this spectacular fall into something magical.

The sprawling living room features a working fireplace with original mantel, hardwood floors, three-arched French doors each leading to a small French wrought iron balcony. There’s enough room for a full size sitting area and a separate home cinema area.

The formal dining room enjoys a stainless and leather chandelier that glows like a beautiful box. It drops 9 feet from the ceiling to hover over the dining room table that can seat as many at 10 people.

In the very middle of the apartment, there is a striking glass room. When we renovated the place, we though it needed some outdoor space, so we created a glassed-in winter garden with Travertine floors, pond, and a 14’ waterfall. The sound system allows you to separate this area as a separate zone, so you can sit and relax in the open air next to your very own travertine waterfall.

The kitchen is for cooks. A beautiful design houses, stainless appliances from Sweden and Italy, a striking brushed granite countertop, black and stainless cabinetry from Buenos Aires best fabricator, a 264-bottle wine cave, and the rarest pair of all appliances in Buenos Aires, a full-size dishwasher and a garbage disposer. There’s plenty of storage for anything you can think to create.

Across from the winter garden there is a sculptural staircase of wood and granite that ascends along an African wood paneled wall. At the top, the escritorio (desk) overlooks the dining room and the winter garden. A peek out the window and you see the top of the waterfall that greeted your entrance. A quick turn and you walk across a glass bridge to the guestroom, with a full and stylish bath. Tucked far in the back is the laundry with a full size Maytag washer and a full size American dryer to fluff your towels.

The fluffy towels you will need when you return to the first floor and enter the master bedroom cum personal spa. The king sized bed with lux linens and too many pillows is just the beginning. There is a floating double-travertine sink below backlit mirrors that stretch all the way to the ceiling. Next you’ll have to choose between a full-size sauna big enough for two to lie down in or the enormous formed concrete Japanese soaking tub. Perhaps you’d rather sit on the lounging deck next to the gas fireplace. You can keep your towels warm and waiting and the towel warmer.

Through out the house there are systems that make everything easier. A four zone, wireless music system controlled by a music server and wireless handset similar to an iPod makes music easy to select and direct. In wall speakers in the winter garden, the office, the spa connect to the server and the in-wall wiring for the home theatre. The apartment is so large that a wireless network left some dead zones, so there is a supplementary in-wall Ethernet network accessible from every room. There are two different temperature control systems: radiators that run on a gas boiler and heating/cooling splits that run on electricity. An alarm system and security door keep you safe.

The neighborhood is one of the greenest and most open in Buenos Aires. You are one block from the parks at Plaza Chile, Plaza Uruguay, and La Isla. For art lovers, its three blocks to the Fine Arts Museum and four blocks to the MALBA—the new Latin American art museum. All in this little two-block street nestled in the middle of the most important embassies and monuments of the city. This is the prefect location to enjoy all of Buenos Aires.
